Recent News Highlights the “Dark Side” of SEO

Kenneth C. Wisnefski, Founder and CEO of WebiMax, offers his insights in to the unethical and illegal "black hat" SEO tactics that are plaguing the SEO industry

There are thousands of search engine optimization (SEO) firms in the world that claim they are the “best of the best” and that they get their clients the optimum results (being in Google’s Top 10 search results). However, just as in any industry or line of work, there are the right and wrong ways of “getting the job done”. Highlighted by recent news that broke on February 12, 2011, in which retailer JCPenneys was reproached by Google for using “black hat SEO” tactics to populate the Top 5 search results for terms having little to do with the company; this brings to light the use of “black hat” tactics in SEO. This is similar to how Enron Inc. brought light to faulty accounting procedures which eventually led to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
