Google opened up a new feature to their AdWords platform called Dynamic Search Ads. This new initiative includes Google automatically generating your headline based on what was searched for, adding an almost on the fly customized direct marketing strategy. It is estimated that 16% of search queries on Google have never been searched before. Dynamic Search Ads will capture this 16% by tweaking the headline as necessary to reach the intended audience.

Google Wallet, the new electronic self-checkout system that aims to simplify common purchases, reportedly entered into a contract with New Jersey Transit, the NJ based mass-transit system that includes Trains, Busses, and Subway systems in and out of New York and Pennsylvania. The company announced this week that they are implementing the ecommerce system to its ticketing machines throughout the state. What does this mean for busy commuters? Simply wave your iPhone or Android device in front of the ticket machine to automatically purchase your ticket and hop aboard.

Google announced that their local search service “Google Places”, will now allow the local business to submit their data including business hours, address, name, and more directly. This more streamlined process places more trust in the business. Google stated “the organic listing will automatically be updated and the business owner will be sent an email notification about the change”. Google released their Q3 earnings at the closing bell of yesterday’s trading session. The company reported a 33% jump in revenue, year over year, in large part due to a 23% rise in their search ad business. “Search ad business” is better known as pay per click services. When Google CEO Eric Schmidt spoke that the United States Senate hearings back in September, he was asked if the company’s methods could be a bit more transparent. The CEO of the search engine titan replied “There is a limit to the amount of transparency – it is proprietary and if it was more open it would be heavily gamed”. He did however then state that “we can do a better job describing our changes”. Perhaps the most recent evidence of the “better job” came last week as Matt Cutts stated “Weather report: expect some Panda-related flux in the next few weeks, but will have less impact than previous updates”. This statement is of course referring to the Panda update that was first launched in early spring of 2011.

Facebook has joined with Microsoft’s Bing to provide translation services on the popular social media platform. If a user wants to read someone’s page in a foreign country, a link will appear on the right side of the text with the translated text. Microsoft announced a new Microsoft Translator API last month.

eMarketer, the industry leader in marketing research, predicts that advertisers will spend $1.23 billion on mobile advertising through the end of 2011. This analysis is up from $743 million last year, and forecasts the number to well-surpass $4 billion by 2015. The dramatic increase in this industry is in direct relation to the emergence of smartphones. eMarketer also suggests that 38% of US mobile users have a smartphone in 2011, and 41% use mobile internet at least once per month.

Google Maps added a few new features this week, including “Helicopter” view. The new view provides a fly-over view of the route the user specifies between two destinations. This new 3D view is available to users that have the Google Earth plug-in installed on their computer. This not only adds enhanced video and viewing capabilities, but provides a “practice run” for drivers that are unfamiliar with how to get to specific destinations, and are unfamiliar with the area.
